Why do young girls scream?

I've lived a sheltered life, so perhaps this is just a cultural phenomenon with American girls. I would be very interested in knowing, so if you have insight, please share.

But I do wonder: why do young girls scream--at the top of their lungs--when they are playing?

I must admit: it bugs me.

Having lived in a small, courtyard-style apartment building full of young children for six years, I'm here to say it's not just young girls.

Young girls scream for two basic reasons: they CAN, and they realize it REALLY gets to some people. Of course it may be that they are so present in their existential moment that they are obliged to express their intense presence in some audial manner, but if that's true, what does that say about guys?
